style 101: intro to honing your fashion style

You might be asking yourself why do you even need to care about your fashion? This is your style 101 guide and a breakdown of why fashion is a forgotten superpower.

This is either the easiest question in the world for someone to answer (meaning, they don’t have a sense of fashion) or it’s one of the hardest to put down into words.

It’s not as if I didn’t love fashion at all ages. I have always found myself whether it was the obsession with all things lacey and frilly at a very early age, or rocking elaborate outfits as a toddler… Fashion, I can genuinely say might be in my blood. Or at the very least, my soul.

But, that’s not to say I haven’t felt out of place or uncomfortable in fashion before. And that’s definitely not an absolute no-hitter for my past fashion choices.

Your style is integral to who you are:

It can get complicated when you really love fashion. Trends come and go- you jump on that bandwagon so fast that when you stop to LOOK at the trend later… You maybe realize it wasn’t for you.

But, for me, that wasn’t exactly my issue, per se.  When I look back on my high school, college, and young adult self the times I really abhor my fashion choices are linked directly to me not identifying with them. They don’t FEEL like me… And well, they weren’t me and they weren’t my creations either.

At times of insecurity, I would rather look to an icon to mimic, than to take a chance on my own style evolution.

That created a healthy amount of successful looks and a very unhealthy amount of losses. And at the end of the day, none of those looks belonged to me.

Now, this is not to say my fashion sense now is not inspired or evolved from icons, influencers, and the social world around me.  In fact, it very much is. It’s the root of all fashion evolutions in the world. What we see around us, becomes part of us, it imprints on us in a way that makes you want to wear it. It leads us to want to learn things like fashion style 101.

But this is focusing on HOW does one look at a trend and decide if it’s right for you? Well, I actually wrote a nifty little guide on how to do exactly that AND how to improve your overall style.

This journey of fashion begins with mindset.  Are you wearing clothes to fit in? Or are you wearing clothes to express yourself?

If you want to fit in, in the conventional sense…. I’m not talking about being the only person wearing jeans at a black-tie event… I’m talking about your average person who doesn’t care about fashion or appreciate its ability to transform an individual.  If you are in the latter camp, I’m not sure I can help you.  I don’t mean that harshly, it’s just that we don’t share the same values and that’s ok.

But, if you’ve spent countless hours scrolling social media, wondering how that badass suit looks so good on that girl and makes you look like you’re ready for your great uncle’s funeral…. We have some things to discuss.

Let me first start off by saying, fashion is not binary.  Just because it looks good on someone else, does not mean it will look good on you in the exact same way.

Fashion, in all its glory, is also very fluid.  It is not the outfit you adore on that influencer or icon- it is what they represent.  The image speaks to you in a way, that is why it is successful.

So remember, that copying a look exactly as you’ve seen it before is not usually a recipe for success.  Because that outfit won’t represent you, and all your beautiful qualities that should be highlighted.

It’s like trying to sing like Janis Joplin.  You may have a fantastic voice, but if you try to sound like someone else, it probably won’t be very successful.

How do I tackle new trends?

However, I’m here to show you HOW to take notes from that outfit you loved so much and turn it into something that feels like you. It’s a mindset shift and an understanding of fashion that will literally change the way you view your image.

You do not have to be a “trendy” person to try trends.  In fact, as Miranda Priestly (Devil Wears Prada) so eloquently stated, you are in fact wearing trends, even if you don’t realize it.

So why not be more intentional with your fashion choices?

Why you need to develop a sense of self through your fashion choices:

I think you should consider signing up for my free style guide. I’m not a “salesy” person. In fact, I downright suck at pitching myself.  So, if I’m telling you that you should do this, it must be pretty, darn important.

Fashion helped me find myself. I was insecure and unsure of who I was and wanted to be.  Even at my worst fashion decisions, it was still a journey that took me to a place where fashion has become my home. And it can be yours too.

I’m not saying you need to become a fashion influencer tomorrow. All I’m trying to help you do is find yourself and your confidence through the beauty of your clothes.

Think about how important an image is…. When you walk into a restaurant that has run down furniture, and outdated decor you instinctively make assumptions.  You assume the food is probably not good, or the kitchen is not well maintained as well.  Is it fair or true? No… Of course not. That restaurant could have Michelin star food for all we know… But, our society makes judgments.

Now, the same is true for the overly beautiful restaurant.  We assume we will not only like their food, but that assumption probably shades our opinion as well.

This is not a singular example that is relegated to restaurants only… We make those same judgments with people we don’t know, people we are meeting, and even our closest friends and family.

People who are close to me, have come to expect my fashion choices.  So they don’t really question them.  Or if they do, they don’t share it with me.

So, I’m going to break it down for you. Fashion is an integral part of our lives whether we are actively participating or not.  Even if you think your fashion choices are “fine”, well first, I would say we need to work on your expectations because “fine” is never where we want to be/strive for… And second, I can only describe it as a superpower you are missing out on. The way you feel about yourself, and the second-hand effect of how others perceive you is so incredibly powerful. Don’t miss out on that because you were “ok” with not caring.

Fashion is not as hard as you might think. And even if you’re a fashion expert, I still recommend this style guide… Because at its most base intention, it is a mindset shift. And whether you are a novice at fashion or an expert, appreciating why and how you should go about delving into the subject further will change everything.
